100 Afghan Women

100 Afghan Women is a documentary photography project that showcases the lives of Afghan women of different ages, backgrounds, occupations and lifestyles living inside and outside Afghanistan. In the past, and in the present for the most part, the image of Afghan women presented to the world has been from either an Afghan male or a foreigner perspective which has created a stereotype whereby Afghan women are either heroines or victims. The goal of this project is to present, from an Afghan female perspective, a broader and deeper view of Afghan women's experiences.

Since 2017 I have followed Afghan women living inside and outside Afghanistan and documented their daily lives. These women, who come from many different backgrounds and have a wide range of educational and life experiences, include politicians, activists, feminists, lawyers, journalists, filmmakers, writers, models, actors, musicians and singers, educators, businesswomen, Islamic scholars, sportswomen, military officers, mothers and housewives, and many other occupations.

In addition to photography, the project will include handwritten letters and audio recordings of each of the 100 Afghan Women. The photography will be done in documentary storytelling style and will also include portraiture. I will use my photography skills developed over the past 20 years to present each woman in such a way that they can see themselves in the images.

The handwritten letters will allow each woman to share some of their life experiences in their own words and language, giving them an opportunity to express themselves freely, sharing thoughts, feelings and rationale for their choices in life. The audio recordings of each woman reading their own letter will create a deeper, humanistic connection between the individual women and the audience.

As an Afghan female photographer, my goal is to produce a body of work that will reflect the modern reality of Afghan women living inside and outside Afghanistan. The project will create a visual and textual historical record of 100 Afghan women who have lived between the 1960s and the present. It will inform the younger generation of Afghan women and show the global community an unseen side of the lives of Afghan women. My hope is that the project will keep Afghan women in the big picture of global affairs, and that their voices will be heard as our country evolves.
